Install Spotify using snap on Ubuntu / Debian / Fedora

Thanks to the internet many things have changed and one of them is the way of listening to music. So in this post, you will learn how to install Spotify using Snap. This post will be useful if you use Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora.

As is well known, Spotify is an on-demand music platform. It has a huge music catalog and it is unlikely that you won’t find your favorite artists and songs.

One of the great features of Spotify is the quality of the music and its great desktop client which has versions for Windows and many Linux distributions in the form of a Snap package.

But there is one detail to keep in mind and that is that not all Linux distributions support Snap in a native way which implies doing an extra step.

So, let’s start.

How to install Spotify using Snap on Ubuntu

In the case of ubuntu, it is the simplest case because it supports Snap by default and does almost nothing.

This happens because Snap is a proprietary technology of Canonical which is the company behind Ubuntu.

So, all you have to do is open Ubuntu’s software center and search for Spotify.

1.- Spotify on the Ubuntu software center
1.- Spotify on the Ubuntu software center

Then, you will see a screen where you will have the information about the program and to start the installation process, just click on the Install button.

2.- Spotify package
2.- Spotify package

After entering your password the installation will begin.

When the installation is finished you can run it from the main menu.

Or you can use the terminal…

If you think the terminal is a faster way, you can open one and run the following command:

sudo snap install spotify
3.- Install Spotify using snap
3.- Install Spotify using snap

And you will get the same result.

4.- Spotify installed
4.- Spotify installed

How to install Spotify using Snap on Debian / Fedora

Debian and Fedora are Linux distributions that have opted for Flatpak and therefore Snap is not installed by default.

So, to install Snap on Debian 10 Buster, open a terminal and run:

sudo apt install snapd
Reading package lists… Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information… Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
linux-headers-4.19.0-10-amd64 linux-headers-4.19.0-10-common
linux-image-4.19.0-10-amd64
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following NEW packages will be installed:
snapd
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded.
Need to get 14.3 MB of archives.

Once the installation is complete, you can install any Snap package such as Spotify in Debian.

In the case of Fedora you can install the snapd daemon by running the following command:

sudo dnf install snapd

Now you can install Spotify:

sudo snap install spotify

As in the previous method, after entering the password the installation process will start and when it is finished you can run it from the main menu.

Conclusion

In Linux, there is no longer a time when there were no programs for almost anything. Now big companies are looking to this side and providing support. This is the case of Spotify where we can enjoy a very extensive music catalog.
